Education in Senegal is, in theory, compulsory for all children between the ages of 7 and 13. In 1997, only 71 % of primary school-age children and 16 % of secondary school-age children were actually attending school. Institutions of higher education had an enrollment of 24,100 in 1995. The University of Dakar, founded in 1949, has a famous research institute for studies of black Africa. The principal art, history, and maritime museums are in Dakar.
